neon lights were discovered by chance in an experiment by British chemist Ramsay. It was a night in June 1898, and Ramsay and his assistants were conducting experiments in the laboratory to check whether a noble gas conducts electricity.

Ramsay injected a rare gas into an evacuated glass tube, and then connected the two metal electrodes enclosed in the evacuated glass tube to a high-voltage power supply, and concentratedly observed whether the gas could conduct electricity. They found that the noble gas injected into the vacuum tube not only began to conduct electricity, but also emitted an extremely beautiful red light.
